1. Vinegar Alone Cleans Carpets
Vinegar is often recommended as the natural cleaner for carpet stains. Even though it works great as a disinfectant, it cannot remove stains alone. Vinegar needs to be added to something like dish soap to effectively remove stains. According to the Journal of Environmental Health, they tested vinegar along with other natural cleaning products and found that vinegar as a stand-alone cleaner for carpeting is the least effective cleaner. Typically people will use 2 cups of water, with one tablespoon of vinegar and one tablespoon of dish soap. This is a diluted solution to prevent damage from the dish soap.

2. You Don’t Have To Vacuum Your Carpets Often
We have heard this one kicked around for a long time. This is one of the silliest things we have heard. Unfortunately, several people have been told that you don’t’ have to vacuum on a regular basis, that it is bad for a carpet to be cleaned often. Modern carpet has been designed and built to withstand a lot of vacuuming. Regular cleaning of your carpet removes up to 80% of the dirt and other pollutants extending the life of the carpet.

3. Hair Spray Can Be Used On Carpet
Yes, it is crazy that someone might use hairspray on a carpet, but hairspray will not replace carpet protector. Hairspray is designed to be used on hair, not carpet fibers. Hairspray if left on your carpet will attract dirt and other contaminants. If left for a long period of time, it can permanently damage your carpet.

4. New Carpets Do Not Need To Be Cleaned
It is completely a myth that if you have a new carpet, that you don’t have to vacuum it. Even if a carpet looks clean, there are still contaminants in the fibers that you can see that need to be removed. New carpet is designed to hide stains as well. You should have your new carpet professionally cleaned at least twice a year to keep it looking great.

5. Ammonia Can Be Used To Clean A Carpet
Ammonia is a high-alkaline solution that can severely damage your carpet and is toxic for your health. It can create fumes that can cause respiratory problems if inhaled. It can be very dangerous if mixed with other chemicals even if those chemicals are present on the surface of your floor or carpeting.
